Patagonia Ascent

Between the Piedras Blancas Glacier and the Río Eléctrico valley lies this striking red mountain. Its name comes from the strong Patagonian winds that, when hitting the valley slopes, create a sound similar to thunder during an electrical storm.

This mountain features a glacier in its upper section, which we ascend to reach the summit. From the top, you will enjoy magnificent views of the ice field, with Cerro Fitz Roy rising impressively in front of us as a reward for the effort.

  • Recommended season: October to March

PROGRAM

The day before the expedition we meet with the guide to finalize details and check the required equipment.

Day 1

We take a transfer to the Río Eléctrico bridge, where the ascent begins. We hike approximately 40 minutes to the base of the mountain. From there, we gain about 600 meters of elevation over approximately 2.5 hours until reaching the glacier front, where we set up base camp.

Day 2

Early in the morning, taking advantage of good snow conditions, we begin the ascent using glacier travel techniques. After approximately 4 more hours, we reach the summit, where, weather permitting, we enjoy spectacular views of the Fitz Roy massif and the ice field.

We descend via the same route. After dismantling base camp, we continue back to the Río Eléctrico bridge to take the transfer back to El Chaltén. Total elevation gain is around 1100 meters, with approximately 8 hours of ascent and descent.

DIFFICULTY

Physical difficulty: Intermediate. May include off-trail sections and steep scree slopes. Distances between 10–20 km and elevation gains between 500–1000 m.

Technical skills: Glacier experience required. Proper use of crampons and ice axe is necessary.

Note: You can check our Difficulty Levels, General Information and Terms & Conditions for more details before booking.
