Patagonia Ascent

Being the second most important spire in height, in addition to its aesthetic silhouette, it is one of the great objectives in Patagonia. A real challenge due to the variety of terrain on the way to its small summit.

Great glaciers, snowfields and cracks in perfect granite make Poincenot a unique peak among the great mountains of Patagonia.

  • Difficulty: High
  • Duration: 3 days

PROGRAM

The day before the expedition there is a brief meeting with the guide to check equipment and arrange last-minute details.

DAY 1

Once all the equipment is organized, we drive to Hostería El Pilar on the way to Río Eléctrico. We start with a 2-hour hike to Poincenot camp, and then continue one more hour to Laguna de los Tres, one of the most popular hikes in Patagonia.

We continue along the southern margin of the lake using fixed ropes and easy climbing to bypass a rock outcrop. We gear up to cross the glacier, which leads us to the base camp called Paso Superior.

  • Distance: 12 km
  • Duration: 7–8 hours
  • Elevation gain: 1500 m
  • Camp: Paso Superior

DAY 2

Great day of climbing. We leave Paso Superior very early to take advantage of daylight and glacier conditions.

The standard route is the Whillans-Cochrane ramp with a 550 m climb (5+, 70°, M4), involving a highly technical ascent that combines multiple types of terrain. A great objective for climbers looking to progress in mountaineering.

This will be a long day of approximately 20 hours until we return to base camp.

  • Duration: approx. 20 hours

DAY 3

We return to the village following the same route as Day 1.

  • Distance: 12 km
  • Duration: approx. 6 hours
  • Descent: 1500 m
