Patagonia Ascent

The great giant of Patagonia is one of the biggest goals for alpinists from Argentina and around the world. Routes like Franco-Argentina, Supercanaleta, Californiana and Afanasieff are some of the classic options on this peak.

PROGRAM

Depending on the time of year, mountain conditions and the climber’s experience, we will choose one of several route options:

  • Southeast Face – Franco-Argentina (ice / mixed rock)
  • Northwest Face – Afanasieff (rock)
  • West Face – Supercanaleta (ice / mixed / rock)

Although each route has its own characteristics, all demand a great physical and technical effort. On average, the ascent takes 4 days.

DAY 1

Approach to base camp, depending on the chosen route: Paso Superior or a bivouac on the west side. We hike through forests and glacier moraines with an elevation gain of approximately 800 m.

  • Duration: approx. 8 hours

DAY 2

Climbing day until reaching a bivouac on the wall along one of the selected routes.

  • Duration: approx. 12 hours

DAY 3

We continue climbing to the summit and then begin the descent by rappelling, usually via the Franco-Argentina route, returning to Paso Superior base camp.

DAY 4

Return to El Chaltén from Paso Superior base camp.

DIFFICULTY

Very difficult technical alpine terrain, which may include rock climbing and ice climbing. Elevation gain of 1000 to 1500 m or more.
