Aguja Mermoz is the third-highest peak in the Fitz Roy Range. It lies north of Fitz Roy, and climbing it poses a major challenge for any climber.

The Argentina route is the most accessible option, following a natural line along the west face for 600 meters at 6a+.

PROGRAM

The day before the expedition there is a brief meeting with the guide to check equipment and arrange last-minute details.

DAY 1

Approach to base camp Piedra Negra. From El Chaltén we take a shuttle to Río Eléctrico. From there we hike for two hours on an easy trail to Piedra del Fraile base camp. After Piedra del Fraile, we follow a steep path up to Piedra Negra where we set up our tent.

  • Elevation gain: 900 m
  • Duration: approx. 5 hours

DAY 2

Climbing day. We leave Piedra Negra early in the morning to attempt the summit. We hike for about 3 hours across technical terrain, including glacial moraines, a glacier, fixed ropes and granite slabs.

From there, the climb begins. It’s approximately 600 meters to the summit, and after reaching the top we descend via the same route back to camp.

This will be a long day lasting between 16 and 20 hours.

DAY 3

Piedra Negra to El Chaltén. We return following the same route as Day 1.

DIFFICULTY

Difficult alpine terrain, which may include steep scree slopes, use of short rope technique, rock climbing, ice climbing, moraines, glaciers and snow. Elevation gain of 1,000 m or more.
