Cerro Solo – El Chaltén, Patagonia Argentina

Cerro Solo is the most popular moderate mountaineering objective in the area. It involves easy scrambling, some glacier travel, and straightforward snow or ice climbing.

The summit offers phenomenal views of both Cerro Torre and the Fitz Roy group, as well as the vast Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

PROGRAM


On the day prior to departure, we will meet with the guide to check equipment and review the plan.

Day 1

From El Chaltén, we follow the trail to Laguna Torre. After crossing the tyrolean, we continue along the lake until reaching a small stream descending from Cerro Solo. Just before leaving the forest, we set up camp.

  • Duration: 4 hours

Day 2 – Summit Day

We ascend scree slopes alongside the stream until reaching the ridge at the end of the glacier (scrambling grade 3). We skirt the right side of the glacier to reach the rock band below the summit, traverse left, and climb the final steep glacier section (up to 50°), crossing a bergschrund and several crevasses. Return to camp the same day.

Day 3

Descent back to El Chaltén.

  • Duration: 4 hours
DIFFICULTY

Physical difficulty: Alpine terrain including steep scree slopes, use of short rope techniques, rock sections, moraines, glaciers, and snow. Elevation gain of 1,000 m or more.

Technical skills: Glacier experience required, including proper use of crampons and ice axe.
