Patagonia Ascent

El Chaltén is one of the best and still relatively unexplored ski mountaineering areas in Argentina, with a long winter season and magnificent snow conditions.

The great variety of terrain, orientations and slopes allows for exceptional skiing in a true Patagonian environment. Skiing among iconic peaks such as Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre makes this experience unique.

A full week of skiing in the best snow in Patagonia, combined with time in the small mountain village of El Chaltén, is a perfect adventure objective. Cerro Vespignani, Mosquito, Crestón and Madsen are some of the areas we will explore.

PROGRAM

DAY 1

Arrival in El Chaltén. We check ski equipment and clothing, and adapt the program according to weather conditions to ensure the best possible experience during the week.

DAY 2

Early departure towards the Mosquito stream valley. Depending on snow conditions, we may need to hike 30 to 50 minutes carrying skis before starting the ascent.

The valley offers a variety of orientations and slopes, making it an ideal place to begin the ski week. Return to El Chaltén.

DAY 3

We head to Cerro Crestón valley. After a 1.5-hour drive, we hike approximately 40 minutes to reach the refuge where we will stay for two nights.

After settling in, we go skiing near the glacier. Options include Coll Central and the north shoulder before returning to the refuge.

DAY 4

From the refuge we access Cerro Vespignani valley. We ascend to the north col, descend to the Huemul glacier, and begin the ascent of the mountain.

Return to the refuge via Laguna Huemul.

DAY 5

After breakfast, we head to the central summit and ski down the natural waterfall line, continuing through the Lomo del Refugio valley.

At the end of the day, we prepare to return to El Chaltén.

DAY 6

Long day skiing near Laguna de los Tres, a classic viewpoint of Fitz Roy. We explore options such as Cerro Madsen and its southern slopes, known for good snow and slope angle.

We descend to Poincenot camp where we spend the night.

DAY 7

After breakfast, we return to Laguna de los Tres and head to the French Valley viewpoint, with panoramic views of the massif and Laguna Sucia.

At the end of the day, we return to camp and continue back to El Chaltén.

DIFFICULTY

Intermediate skiers: No prior backcountry experience required, but a solid off-piste skiing level is necessary. Cumulative elevation gain between 1,000 and 1,500 meters, with slopes up to 40°.

Advanced skiers: Backcountry skiing experience required, including use of skins and strong off-piste skills. Cumulative elevation gain over 1,500 meters, with slopes steeper than 40°.
